Rethinking Dark

For Paul W., who left too soon but said Goodbye all the time.

We love you, Paul, and see your black pearls shine through the glory of the night.

Paul’s birthday song one year. He believed angels, and other holy things, were dark. Black.

Thank you, Stacey. This poem remains one of the closest to my heart. Like the human being whose heart first received it.

I hope your day is stellar somehow.

Thank you. Paul was one of the most magnificent and joy-filled friends you can imagine. His laughter still won’t leave the rooms he visited.

I have trouble with all the old fairytales, in which darkness is ugly and evil and something to be avoided.

I don’t know anyone who ever listened to that “advice” though. Once you tell a child not to go into the forest because he is not allowed, the child sneaks off into the forest, illuminating the darkness whatever is there. Black is beautiful. Always was. Always will be.
